Mary seems to live in her own world, totally isolated. She starts to dislike Dick more and more. Mary tries to give her husband advice, but it's already too late. He always starts a project but never finishes it. Mary has to run the farm now, and soon she discovers why Dick doesn't make any money. Dick comes to take her back to the farm, but after a while he falls ill. She looks worn out, she is just not the woman she used to be. She goes back to the city to apply for her old job, but they don't need her anymore. He and Dick used to be really good friends but now Mary gets in their way, and Samson decides to leave his job. The servant, Samson and Mary don't get along very well. Mary stays inside the house all day while Dick looks after his land. Everything is dirty and looks very cheap, quite different from her luxurious life in the city. It's even worse than the house where she was brought up. Dick tells her he is poor, but when she arrives at the farm she can't believe what she is seeing. Once in a while he comes to the city to buy things he needs for his farm. Than Mary meets Dick, a farmer, in the local cinema. He kisses her, and she doesn't like it at all. First she meets a fifty-five year old man with children. To get married seems to be a good idea, even though she hates sex. She thinks about it, and decides that she doesn't want to be alone her whole life. By coincidence she overhears her friends saying that they think it's time she got married. She lives in a house for single women, and Mary doesn't want to get married. Mary wants to see more of the world so she moves to the big city, where she finds a job as a secretary, has a lot of friends and seems to be happy. This book is about a woman called Mary, who was raised in the country on a farm.
She becomes obsessed with things she doesn't even like, and she is very persuasive. Her mind developes in a very strange way.
